Troubled girls are precious to parents regardless of their current emotional or behavioral issues. Our parents would agree! Our parents are willing to do whatever it takes to revive and restore their precious daughter. Their commitment to their daughter is unwavering, and they feel compelled to stop at nothing in order for their child to receive the therapeutic help they need.
Our definition of a troubled girl is totally different than that of most therapeutic programs. Re-Creation Retreat is a strengths-based program, meaning we focus on the core strengths of each student. We don’t discount or diminish their behavioral problems, but we don’t define them by their behavior.
The secret to restoring troubled girls is to see them as they can be, and as they are, and not define them by their behavior. Behavior can change, but the core strengths (worth and value) are inherent. Their strength’s may buried and overshadowed by their behavior, but all that can change. We have decided to recognize each one of our students as beautiful and wonderful young ladies waiting to emerge from a cocoon of rebellion. Soon enough the cocoon will be a thing of the past, forgotten, and put away.
The Typical Troubled Girl Definition
The typical student profile of most schools and programs for troubled girls goes something like this… no respect for authority, disrespect to parents, defiant, confrontational, isolated, selfish and self-centered, immature, manipulative, liars, and sneaky. They do not care about themselves, society, or their families. They do not feel any responsibility for their bad choices and blame everyone else. They feel that they are “victims” and they avoid accountability at every turn. They hang around with a bad crowd, are filled with disdain, and are sexually active. In short, they are in danger of throwing their entire life away.
But we see troubled girls differently. What was just described in the paragraph above was a description of the “behavior” of the troubled girl. These descriptions define her choices, but not her worth or value. Therefore, our goal is to see her inner gifts, talents, and inherent value and help those parts of them to emerge and thrive. We see our students as capable, smart, intelligent, and they have what it takes. The behaviors and triggers of those behaviors can be dealt with.
We see our students as incredible gifts, who are struggling to emerge. We see beautiful young ladies with tremendous potential and endless value. They just need an effective therapeutic environment so that they can sort everything out, process what is going on, and learn to live their lives to their fullest potential. With life coaching, personal care, and encouragement they are ready to leave their dysfunctional behaviors and immature emotions behind, becoming the person of value that they were created to be.
